Oberrad
City part: Süd | State: 2025
Oberrad is a former market-gardening village on the southern bank of the Main. Its compact old centre and post-war residential streets are surrounded by extensive herb fields used for Frankfurt's traditional green sauce. The Main riverfront and the slopes toward the city forest provide recreational space, while tram connections link the district directly with Sachsenhausen and Offenbach. The unusually visible agricultural landscape within a metropolitan area is Oberrad's defining characteristic. What makes the area distinctive is the legible contrast between inherited settlement patterns and later housing, infrastructure or redevelopment. Older plot boundaries, street widths and surviving buildings make the area’s history visible in everyday movement, even where later development has altered the wider setting. Courtyards, pedestrian links and shared green spaces are therefore important to how the larger housing forms function at neighbourhood level.
