Ostend: Ostendstraße
City part: Bornheim/Ostend | State: 2025
The Ostendstraße area is a highly connected urban corridor between the city centre, zoo, European Central Bank and Main river. The underground S-Bahn station serves numerous regional lines, while trams on nearby streets and short walking routes make the area a major everyday interchange. Around the station, post-war apartment blocks, offices, schools, hotels and newer residential buildings stand beside surviving older façades. Paul-Arnsberg-Platz provides a local open space, and the former wholesale-market area and ECB tower are visible reminders of the Ostend’s rapid transformation. Hanauer Landstraße brings shops, nightlife and commercial traffic, while side streets become more residential toward the north. The river promenade and Hafenpark are reachable on foot, adding recreation to a district otherwise shaped by movement and redevelopment. Ostendstraße is distinctive because it functions simultaneously as transport node and neighbourhood centre: commuters pass through at high speed, yet residents use the same streets for schools, shopping, cafés and routes to the Main.
