FAQ

How is the Nachbaria rating calculated?

The Nachbaria rating is based on indicators from official statistics and, where available, from social-monitoring reports published by state and municipal authorities.

Where necessary, the data is additionally augmented, processed, standardised and normalised to provide a consistent experience across different cities. This may include combining information from several official datasets, aligning differently structured indicators and converting local classifications into the common Nachbaria rating scale.

Because the available indicators and reporting methods vary between cities, Nachbaria applies its own processing methodology to make the results easier to understand and compare.

What does the “A”–“D” rating scale mean?

Nachbaria uses a simple “A”–“D” scale combined with a traffic-light colour system. It provides a quick and intuitive overview of the social situation and potential challenges within a district.

“A” — Comparatively favourable conditions

An “A” rating indicates that the district performs comparatively well according to the social and demographic indicators included in the assessment.

The available data generally indicates a favourable social situation and relatively few significant challenges compared with other districts in the same city. This does not necessarily mean that the district will suit every user or that all parts of the district offer the same living conditions.

“B” — Conditions typical for the city

A “B” rating indicates that the district broadly reflects the average social situation of the city.

The available indicators show neither particularly favourable conditions nor unusually significant challenges. Individual strengths and weaknesses may still exist, and conditions can vary between different parts of the district.

“C” — Noticeable challenges

A “C” rating indicates that the district faces identifiable social or demographic challenges.

One or more indicators may be less favourable than the city average. These results should be considered when evaluating the area, but they do not mean that the district is unsuitable for living or that every street is affected in the same way.

“D” — Significant challenges

A “D” rating indicates that the official data identifies significant social or demographic challenges within the district.

Several indicators may be considerably less favourable than the city average. The district may also have been classified as an area requiring particular attention or support in an official social-monitoring study. Users should examine the district profile carefully, consider the individual indicators and obtain additional local information before making a housing decision.

The Nachbaria rating is intended as an initial orientation. It does not classify a district as universally “good” or “bad.”

What does Nachbaria mean by “social challenges”?

Social challenges may include indicators such as unemployment, reliance on social assistance, demographic development or other factors identified in official social-monitoring reports.

The exact indicators differ between cities because local authorities use different methodologies and reporting structures.

What data sources does Nachbaria use?

Nachbaria uses official publications and datasets provided by federal, state and municipal authorities. These include social-monitoring reports, municipal statistics, open-data portals and official geoportals.

A detailed overview of the sources used for each city is available on the Sources page.

Is Nachbaria an official government service?

No. Nachbaria is an independent platform.

It processes and interprets official public data, but the ratings, district profiles and conclusions presented by Nachbaria are not official classifications issued by public authorities.

Are ratings comparable between different cities?

Nachbaria standardises and normalises the available data to provide a consistent cross-city experience.

However, the original indicators, reporting periods and administrative structures differ between cities. Comparisons between districts within the same city are therefore generally more accurate than comparisons between districts in different cities.

Does a district with an “A” rating suit everyone?

Not necessarily.

The Nachbaria rating provides a general assessment based on the available social and demographic indicators. Personal priorities such as housing costs, commuting time, schools, public transport, nightlife, green spaces or proximity to family may lead to a different conclusion.

The rating should be treated as a starting point rather than a universal recommendation.

Why does the rating differ from my personal impression of a district?

Nachbaria evaluates statistical data for an entire district or statistical area. Conditions may vary considerably between individual streets, neighbourhoods or housing developments.

Personal experiences and impressions may therefore differ from the overall statistical picture.

Why is the rent in the district profile so low?

The rent figures come from the most recent German census (Zensus). They are net cold rents, so utilities and heating are not included. They also cover every tenancy in the district, including contracts that have been running for 20 or 30 years. Asking rents on property portals are therefore considerably higher. The figure is indicative: it shows which districts are cheaper and which are more expensive.

What geographical area does the rating refer to?

The rating refers to the administrative or statistical area used in the relevant official data source.

These boundaries may not always correspond exactly to commonly used district or neighbourhood names. Conditions can also vary considerably within the rated area, particularly in large or diverse districts.

What period does the displayed data refer to?

Nachbaria uses the most recent data available from the relevant authorities. The year of the latest data update can be found in the district profile.

Official reports are often published with a delay. For this reason, the publication year may differ from the year in which the underlying data was collected.

How often are the rankings and data updated?

Nachbaria regularly reviews official reports, datasets and publications and updates its database when new information becomes available.

The sources and rankings are reviewed at least once a year. Individual cities may be updated more frequently depending on the publication schedule of the responsible authorities.

Can a district rating change?

Yes.

A rating may change when new official data becomes available, when administrative boundaries are adjusted or when Nachbaria improves its processing, standardisation or normalisation methodology.

Why should I use Nachbaria instead of an AI chatbot?

Nachbaria uses a defined set of official data sources, a consistent rating methodology and human editorial review.

General-purpose AI services may generate answers from a broad range of sources and can sometimes provide outdated, subjective or incorrect information. Nachbaria’s structured data-processing approach and human review reduce the risk of hallucinations and inconsistent assessments.

Nachbaria is designed specifically to transform complex official neighbourhood data into clear and comparable housing insights.

Does Nachbaria use artificial intelligence?

Yes. Nachbaria may use artificial intelligence to support routine tasks such as structuring, translating or preparing content.

AI-assisted output is reviewed and controlled by a person before it is published. District ratings and assessments are not published solely on the basis of unreviewed AI output.

Why is my city not supported?

The data required to create a reliable rating is not available for every city.

Nachbaria regularly reviews new reports, studies and official publications and gradually adds cities where sufficient and suitable data is available.

Why are some districts missing?

Some districts or statistical areas have very small populations. In these cases, the available data may be incomplete, statistically unreliable or withheld by the authorities for data-protection reasons.

Nachbaria may exclude such areas when there is not enough reliable information to calculate a meaningful rating.

What should I do if information appears incorrect or outdated?

Please contact Nachbaria via the contact form or by email and include the URL of the affected page, a short description of the issue and, where available, a reliable source supporting the correction.

Corrections and updated official information will be reviewed before changes are made.

Should I base my housing decision only on the Nachbaria rating?

No.

Nachbaria is a decision-support tool and should be used as one source among several. Before making a housing decision, users should also consider their personal priorities, visit the area and review current local information.

A statistical district rating cannot fully reflect every street, building or individual living situation.
