Ostend: Zoo
City part: Bornheim/Ostend | State: 2025
The Zoo area centres on Frankfurt Zoo and Alfred-Brehm-Platz, where a cultural institution meets dense inner-city housing. Founded in 1858, the zoo occupies a green site with historic buildings, animal houses and mature trees, attracting families, school groups and visitors all week. U6 and U7, trams and buses provide strong connections, and the entrances create concentrated pedestrian activity around Bernhard-Grzimek-Allee. The surrounding streets contain Gründerzeit apartments, post-war blocks, cafés, schools and small businesses, so the area remains a lived neighbourhood rather than an isolated attraction. Bethmannpark, Berger Straße and the eastern city centre are nearby, while the Ostend’s newer development toward the ECB begins farther south. Visitor peaks, deliveries and events can make the immediate square busy, but side streets quickly become quieter. What makes the Zoo area distinctive is the unusual presence of a large, internationally known animal park within compact residential blocks, adding greenery, sounds and a changing daily audience to the local urban rhythm.
