Innenstadt: Obermainanlage
City part: Innenstadt I | State: 2025
Obermainanlage is the eastern conclusion of Frankfurt’s Wallanlagen, extending from Allerheiligentor toward the Main and Schöne Aussicht. Mature trees, winding paths and the Rechneigrabenweiher create a surprisingly lush landscape at the edge of the dense inner city. The pond developed from remnants of the former fortification ditch and still contains a fountain and small island, while surviving bastion walls recall the defensive system replaced by the park belt. Sculptures, the grave of Jakob Guiollett and a children’s playground add several layers of use and memory. At the Main end, the reconstructed Old City Library now houses the Literaturhaus, connecting the green space with cultural activity and the river promenade. Hospitals, housing and busy roads surround the park, but platforms and shaded paths close to the water offer genuine retreat. Obermainanlage’s special quality is the continuity between military history, nineteenth-century landscape design and everyday recreation, all compressed into a narrow green corridor between city centre, Ostend and the Main.
