Sachsenhausen-Süd: Südfriedhof
City part: Süd | State: 2025
Südfriedhof is a large, tree-covered cemetery between the residential parts of southern Sachsenhausen and the City Forest. Long avenues, mature vegetation, historic graves and later burial sections create a quiet memorial landscape with a much broader scale than the nearby housing estates. The main entrances on Darmstädter Landstraße and Mörfelder Landstraße are served by trams and buses, while internal paths provide calm walking routes away from traffic. Fritz-Kissel-Siedlung, sports grounds and forest edges surround the cemetery, so it also acts as a substantial green buffer within the southern city. Activity is concentrated around funerals and commemorative visits, but the grounds remain part of the everyday spatial orientation of the neighbourhood. Architectural monuments and old trees give some sections a park-like quality without diminishing their primary purpose. The Südfriedhof area is distinctive because remembrance, ecology and urban separation coincide: it marks the transition from compact residential Frankfurt to the extensive woodland and recreation landscape beyond.
