Osthafen
City part: Bornheim/Ostend | State: 2025
Osthafen is a predominantly industrial and logistics district arranged around the basins of Frankfurt's eastern port. Warehouses, silos, rail sidings, wholesale businesses and utility infrastructure dominate, with very little conventional housing. The Main river, port cranes and long internal roads give the area a large-scale functional landscape distinct from the neighbouring residential Ostend. Recent creative and event uses occupy individual buildings, but freight handling and commercial activity remain the primary character. In Frankfurt’s statistical structure, Osthafen is associated with the broader Ostend area. The balance between building scale, shared open space and pedestrian movement is central to the area’s everyday character. Courtyards, pedestrian links and shared green spaces are therefore important to how the larger housing forms function at neighbourhood level. Its working role becomes most visible through deliveries, shift changes and service traffic, which can produce a very different rhythm from nearby residential streets.
