Messestadt-Riem: Neue Messe
City part: Trudering-Riem | State: 2024
The Neue Messe is a large-scale exhibition and business district built on the former airport grounds in Riem. Expansive halls, plazas, hotels and event traffic create an international atmosphere that becomes especially intense during major fairs. The planned structure of Messestadt Riem combines housing, trade-fair functions, shopping and a large landscape park on the former airport grounds. Riem is marked by the sharp contrast between its historic village core, the trade-fair infrastructure and the planned Messestadt on the former airport land. Different languages, food cultures and patterns of use are visible in ordinary daily life, giving the area a more international character than its architecture alone would suggest. On event days the area’s rhythm changes sharply, with visitor flows, parking demand and public transport becoming much more prominent than in ordinary daily life. Public transport, deliveries, security and temporary traffic management are not secondary details but essential systems that determine how the surrounding streets function.
