Messestadt-Riem: Ost
City part: Trudering-Riem | State: 2024
Ost forms a distinct residential sub-area within Messestadt-Riem. Its character comes from the relationship between building scale, private or shared green space and the short routes used in everyday life. Larger roads and local centres remain accessible, but the interior is experienced mainly through entrances, courtyards, gardens and quieter streets. The planned structure of Messestadt Riem combines housing, trade-fair functions, shopping and a large landscape park on the former airport grounds. Riem is marked by the sharp contrast between its historic village core, the trade-fair infrastructure and the planned Messestadt on the former airport land. Housing, offices and local services now overlap with traces of the former use, creating a quarter whose new identity still remains connected to earlier layers of the site. Different languages, food cultures and patterns of use are visible in ordinary daily life, giving the area a more international character than its architecture alone would suggest.
