Messestadt-Riem: Alt-Riem
City part: Trudering-Riem | State: 2024
Alt-Riem preserves the village core of Riem, with older farmhouses, quiet streets and the historic church setting. Its traditional, almost rural atmosphere contrasts sharply with the nearby trade fair and the modern Messestadt. The planned structure of Messestadt Riem combines housing, trade-fair functions, shopping and a large landscape park on the former airport grounds. Riem is marked by the sharp contrast between its historic village core, the trade-fair infrastructure and the planned Messestadt on the former airport land. Older farmsteads, church settings, plot boundaries and inherited street lines are not merely historical remnants; they still guide orientation and give the area a smaller scale than the surrounding city. Private gardens and mature tree canopies soften the architecture, provide privacy and make seasonal change unusually present in the streetscape. On event days the area’s rhythm changes sharply, with visitor flows, parking demand and public transport becoming much more prominent than in ordinary daily life.
