Trudering-Riem: Riem
City part: Trudering-Riem | State: 2024
Riem retains a historic village core beside the vast modern landscapes of the trade fair and Messestadt. Old farmhouses, the church and quiet local streets create a strong contrast to exhibition halls, logistics and contemporary housing nearby. The planned structure of Messestadt Riem combines housing, trade-fair functions, shopping and a large landscape park on the former airport grounds. Riem is marked by the sharp contrast between its historic village core, the trade-fair infrastructure and the planned Messestadt on the former airport land. Older farmsteads, church settings, plot boundaries and inherited street lines are not merely historical remnants; they still guide orientation and give the area a smaller scale than the surrounding city. Private gardens and mature tree canopies soften the architecture, provide privacy and make seasonal change unusually present in the streetscape. Freight movements, shift changes and service traffic produce a rhythm very different from a residential quarter and show how closely employment infrastructure is woven into Munich’s urban fabric.
