Messestadt-Riem: Riem-Arcaden
City part: Trudering-Riem | State: 2024
Riem-Arcaden is the commercial and transport centre of Messestadt Riem. The shopping complex, underground station, bus connections and the adjoining Willy-Brandt-Platz concentrate everyday services and pedestrian movement within a district otherwise structured by modern housing, the trade fair and large green spaces. The covered retail interior and open square create two contrasting but closely connected forms of public life. Messestadt Riem is one of Munich’s largest planned contemporary districts, built on the former airport site. Modern housing, the trade fair, Riem Arcaden and extensive parkland create a highly organized urban environment with a young, international character. The planned structure of Messestadt Riem combines housing, trade-fair functions, shopping and a large landscape park on the former airport grounds. Riem is marked by the sharp contrast between its historic village core, the trade-fair infrastructure and the planned Messestadt on the former airport land.
