Unterwald
City part: Süd | State: 2025
Unterwald is an almost entirely forested district in Frankfurt's southwest between Schwanheim, the airport and the motorway corridors. It contains woodland, paths, utility infrastructure and parts of the city's recreational green belt, with virtually no conventional residential centre. The district forms an important ecological and spatial buffer around the airport and southern industrial areas. Its identity is defined by continuous forest cover and transport infrastructure rather than by buildings or neighbourhood streets. In Frankfurt’s statistical structure, Unterwald is associated with the broader Stadtwald area. Its character is best understood through the relationship between building form, public space and ordinary daily routes. Its working role becomes most visible through deliveries, shift changes and service traffic, which can produce a very different rhythm from nearby residential streets.
