Flughafen
City part: Süd | State: 2025
Flughafen is a highly specialized district dominated by Frankfurt Airport and its transport, logistics and service infrastructure. Terminals, runways, cargo facilities, hotels, railway stations and large office complexes occupy most of the area, while permanent housing is minimal. The district functions continuously as an international interchange and one of Germany's largest employment locations. Its urban form is determined by aviation security zones, motorway access and the scale of airport operations rather than by conventional neighbourhood streets. Its character is best understood through the relationship between building form, public space and ordinary daily routes. Its working role becomes most visible through deliveries, shift changes and service traffic, which can produce a very different rhythm from nearby residential streets. Transport is part of the visible local structure rather than only a background service, influencing routes, noise exposure and the location of shops or workplaces.
