Griesheim-West: Bahnhofsgärtchen
City part: West | State: 2025
Bahnhofsgärtchen is a small community garden beside Griesheim S-Bahn station, created in 2013 through neighbourhood action on a neglected plot near the signal box. Raised beds, containers, fruit, vegetables and flowers transformed the site into a compact green meeting place. Its importance comes less from size than from location: S1 and S2 trains, buses, bicycle routes and constant commuter movement pass directly beside an area maintained collectively by residents. Seating and gardening activities encourage short conversations and give people a reason to remain near the station rather than simply transfer. The surrounding streets combine post-war housing, local shops, schools and railway infrastructure, so the garden introduces a softer, informal element into a practical transport environment. It also reflects the ‘Aktive Nachbarschaft’ work that supported community projects in Griesheim. Bahnhofsgärtchen is distinctive as a visible example of bottom-up urban improvement: a leftover railway-edge space became a shared garden and neighbourhood address through regular local care.
