Siedlung Praunheim
City part: Mitte-West | State: 2025
Siedlung Praunheim is one of the principal housing estates of the New Frankfurt programme of the late 1920s. Standardized row houses, flat roofs, compact gardens and rational street planning express Ernst May's approach to affordable modern housing. The estate is closely associated with the Frankfurt Kitchen and with architectural debates about functional living. Its coherent modernist structure distinguishes it sharply from the nearby historic village core and later suburban development. In Frankfurt’s statistical structure, Siedlung Praunheim is associated with the broader Praunheim area. What makes the area distinctive is the legible contrast between inherited settlement patterns and later housing, infrastructure or redevelopment. Older plot boundaries, street widths and surviving buildings make the area’s history visible in everyday movement, even where later development has altered the wider setting.
