Siedlung Praunheim-Westhausen
City part: Mitte-West | State: 2025
Westhausen is a large modernist housing estate developed as part of the New Frankfurt programme. Repetitive rows of compact houses and apartment blocks are organized around green spaces and the Ludwig-Landmann-Straße transport corridor. The estate's functional design and standardized construction create a strongly uniform urban landscape. Its architectural significance and planned working-class housing concept distinguish it from the more varied residential districts around Praunheim and Rödelheim. In Frankfurt’s statistical structure, Siedlung Praunheim-Westhausen is associated with the broader Praunheim area. The immediate contact between urban development and substantial landscape or recreational space is one of the area’s clearest distinguishing qualities. Courtyards, pedestrian links and shared green spaces are therefore important to how the larger housing forms function at neighbourhood level.
