Bahnhofsviertel
City part: Innenstadt I | State: 2025
Bahnhofsviertel is a dense inner-city district between the main railway station and the financial centre. Broad late-19th-century streets such as Kaiserstraße and Münchener Straße support an unusually concentrated mix of international restaurants, hotels, offices, nightlife and specialist retail. Much of the Wilhelminian street grid and building stock survived, giving the quarter a coherent urban form. Its defining feature is the constant interaction between long-distance travel, business activity and a highly diverse street-level economy. Its identity rests on the continued readability of older local structures rather than on a single landmark. Older plot boundaries, street widths and surviving buildings make the area’s history visible in everyday movement, even where later development has altered the wider setting. Transport is part of the visible local structure rather than only a background service, influencing routes, noise exposure and the location of shops or workplaces.
