Gallus: Hauptbahnhof
City part: Innenstadt I | State: 2025
The Hauptbahnhof area on the Gallus side is shaped by Frankfurt’s main railway station, its extensive track approaches and the dense city blocks immediately west of the centre. The monumental terminal from 1888 remains the dominant landmark, while platforms, service buildings, hotels, offices and constant passenger flows give the surroundings an almost continuous rhythm. Unlike the Bahnhofsviertel east of the station, the western side opens toward the Gallus, Europaviertel and former railway land, with larger roads and redevelopment sites creating a more fragmented streetscape. Trams, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, regional and long-distance trains make this one of Germany’s most connected locations, but congestion, noise and temporary construction are part of daily life. Small businesses and residential streets appear only a short distance away, especially toward Mainzer Landstraße. The area’s character comes from its role as an urban threshold: international travel, local commuting and the changing western city meet here before the denser neighbourhood fabric of the Gallus begins.
