Neuhausen: Postversuchssiedlung
City part: Neuhausen-Nymphenburg | State: 2024
The Postversuchssiedlung is an experimental housing ensemble that reflects early modern ideas about efficient, affordable urban living. Compact homes, gardens and a clear layout give the settlement a distinctive architectural and social identity. Robert Vorhoelzer and Walther Schmidt built the estate in 1928/29 as an experimental settlement for the Bavarian postal and telegraph association together with the Reich research body for economical construction and housing. Mature trees and adapted everyday uses now soften the repetition of the original building types, adding variety and a stronger sense of lived-in continuity. Shared open spaces support play, informal encounters and short everyday routes, giving the ensemble a stronger neighborhood function than its architectural repetition might suggest. The hierarchy between access roads, pedestrian routes, shared courtyards and larger green spaces makes the original planning idea easy to understand on foot.
