Westend: Astallerstraße
City part: Schwanthalerhöhe | State: 2024
Astallerstraße forms a distinct street corridor within Westend. Building fronts, junctions and everyday movement along the road set a more active rhythm than in the quieter side streets, while nearby housing keeps the area closely tied to ordinary neighbourhood life. The transition between the main route and its calmer edges is the defining spatial feature. The Theresienwiese changes between a vast open field and an internationally known festival ground, so the adjoining streets experience pronounced seasonal rhythms. The interest lies in the continuity of the built fabric: older façades, courtyards and street proportions remain part of ordinary use rather than functioning as isolated monuments. Ground-floor shops, cafés and everyday services keep the streets active and make many routine needs reachable without leaving the immediate area. The mix of daytime neighborhood use and evening cultural or gastronomic activity gives the streets a longer daily cycle than in more purely residential parts of Munich.
