Nordend-West: Hauptfriedhof
City part: Innenstadt III | State: 2025
Frankfurt’s Hauptfriedhof forms a vast historic landscape at the northern edge of Nordend. Opened in the nineteenth century, it contains long avenues, mature trees, architectural tombs and graves of many notable Frankfurt residents. Adjoining Jewish cemeteries add further layers of religious and urban history, while the monumental portals on Eckenheimer Landstraße mark a clear transition from city street to quiet memorial ground. Trams and buses make the cemetery accessible, and its paths are used not only by mourners but also by people seeking a calm, tree-covered route through a dense part of Frankfurt. The surrounding area includes hospitals, housing, administration and major roads, yet the interior soundscape changes quickly behind the walls and gates. Seasonal vegetation and wildlife give the grounds an important ecological role as well. The Hauptfriedhof area is distinctive because remembrance, landscape architecture and everyday urban greenery overlap on an unusually large scale, creating a contemplative counterpoint to the traffic and institutions around it.
