Gallus: Hellerhofsiedlung
City part: Innenstadt I | State: 2025
Hellerhofsiedlung is one of the most important housing ensembles of Frankfurt’s ‘New Frankfurt’ programme. Designed under Ernst May and built mainly between 1929 and 1932, the estate uses long brick rows, rational floor plans and carefully organised green spaces to provide light, air and affordable homes. Around 1,200 small flats were created, many originally equipped with the pioneering Frankfurt Kitchen. The repeated façades give the quarter a strong architectural unity, while mature trees, courtyards and later everyday adaptations prevent it from feeling rigid. Schools, playgrounds and local shops support a self-contained residential routine, and tram lines on Mainzer Landstraße connect the estate with the centre. Europaviertel rises immediately to the north, making the contrast between interwar modernism and twenty-first-century development especially visible. Hellerhofsiedlung’s distinctive quality lies in this combination of internationally significant social-housing history and an ordinary, still functioning neighbourhood landscape.
