Gallus: Kleyerstraße
City part: Innenstadt I | State: 2025
Kleyerstraße is the industrial-historical spine of the Gallus. Its best-known complex is the former Adlerwerke, where bicycles, cars, motorcycles and later office machines were produced, making the street central to Frankfurt’s manufacturing history. The same site also carries a darker legacy: in 1944–45 the Katzbach concentration-camp subcamp was operated in the factory, and today a memorial and educational centre documents forced labour and persecution. Preserved brick and concrete halls now accommodate offices, services, the Gallus Theater and cultural uses, while newer housing and commercial buildings fill former factory plots. Tram stops on Mainzer Landstraße and the nearby Galluswarte provide links, though delivery traffic and broad industrial parcels still shape parts of the route. Kleyerstraße is not a uniform residential street; it changes between heritage buildings, municipal offices, workshops and new development. Its special importance comes from the visible overlap of technological innovation, workers’ history, Nazi-era violence and contemporary cultural reuse.
