Untermenzing-Allach: Kraus-Maffei-Siedlung

The Kraus-Maffei-Siedlung was built in close connection with the major machinery works and retains a clear workers’ housing identity. Modest homes, gardens and industrial proximity create a grounded atmosphere shaped by employment history. The interest lies in the continuity of the built fabric: older façades, courtyards and street proportions remain part of ordinary use rather than functioning as isolated monuments. Freight movements, shift changes and service traffic produce a rhythm very different from a residential quarter and show how closely employment infrastructure is woven into Munich’s urban fabric. The hierarchy between access roads, pedestrian routes, shared courtyards and larger green spaces makes the original planning idea easy to understand on foot. Mature trees and adapted everyday uses now soften the repetition of the original building types, adding variety and a stronger sense of lived-in continuity.
