St. Ulrich: Agnes-Bernauer-Siedlung
City part: Laim | State: 2024
The Agnes-Bernauer-Siedlung is a compact housing ensemble in western Munich, shaped by regular building rows, shared courtyards and mature greenery. Its calm, practical layout reflects the social-housing ideals of its time and gives the area a strong neighborhood scale. Shared open spaces support play, informal encounters and short everyday routes, giving the ensemble a stronger neighborhood function than its architectural repetition might suggest. The hierarchy between access roads, pedestrian routes, shared courtyards and larger green spaces makes the original planning idea easy to understand on foot. Mature trees and adapted everyday uses now soften the repetition of the original building types, adding variety and a stronger sense of lived-in continuity. Repeated building types create visual order, while courtyards, lawns and internal paths break down the scale and support play, walking and informal contact.
