Friedenheim: Alte Heimat
City part: Laim | State: 2024
Alte Heimat is a modest post-war settlement built for displaced families and shaped by simple housing, open courtyards and mature trees. Its social history and quiet internal spaces give the quarter a strong sense of continuity and community. Created for Munich families who had been evacuated during the bombing war, the settlement was enabled by a foundation for the city’s 800th anniversary; construction began in 1959 and the ensemble was completed in 1962. The separation of traffic, housing and green space reveals the planning ideals of the post-war period, but mature vegetation has made the ensemble feel more settled and less schematic over time. Mature trees and adapted everyday uses now soften the repetition of the original building types, adding variety and a stronger sense of lived-in continuity. Shared open spaces support play, informal encounters and short everyday routes, giving the ensemble a stronger neighborhood function than its architectural repetition might suggest.
