Obergiesing: Stockwerksiedlung Walchenseeplatz
City part: Obergiesing-Fasangarten | State: 2024
The Stockwerksiedlung at Walchenseeplatz is an important early modern housing ensemble with compact apartment blocks and carefully planned green courtyards. Its architecture and public spaces create a strong community identity within Giesing. The Giesing context adds steep streets, working-class history and a strong local identity that remains visible in everyday businesses and neighborhood culture. According to the city’s historical index, the estate was built from 1927 to 1930 within Munich’s large-housing program; only about two thirds of the original plan were realized. The hierarchy between access roads, pedestrian routes, shared courtyards and larger green spaces makes the original planning idea easy to understand on foot. Mature trees and adapted everyday uses now soften the repetition of the original building types, adding variety and a stronger sense of lived-in continuity. Shared open spaces support play, informal encounters and short everyday routes, giving the ensemble a stronger neighborhood function than its architectural repetition might suggest.
