Obergiesing: Agfa-Gelände
City part: Obergiesing-Fasangarten | State: 2024
The former Agfa site is a clear example of southern Munich’s industrial transformation. New apartments and offices stand beside traces of the old factory landscape, creating a dense mixed-use quarter with a distinctly contemporary feel. Large parcels, robust buildings and technical infrastructure remain legible even where production has declined, so the area’s earlier working history still shapes its scale and atmosphere. Freight movements, shift changes and service traffic produce a rhythm very different from a residential quarter and show how closely employment infrastructure is woven into Munich’s urban fabric. Housing, offices and local services now overlap with traces of the former use, creating a quarter whose new identity still remains connected to earlier layers of the site. Public spaces, ground-floor uses and the relationship between construction phases are crucial because they determine whether the development becomes a recognizable neighborhood rather than only a collection of new buildings.
