Hackenviertel: Sendlinger Tor
City part: Altstadt-Lehel | State: 2024
Sendlinger Tor marks the southern edge of Munich’s medieval old town and remains one of the surviving historic city gates. Its flanking towers and central arch stand beside a busy square where underground services, trams, buses, cycling routes and pedestrian streets meet. The result is a strong contrast between inherited fortification architecture and one of the centre’s most intensive everyday transport spaces. The interest lies in the continuity of the built fabric: older façades, courtyards and street proportions remain part of ordinary use rather than functioning as isolated monuments. Ground-floor shops, cafés and everyday services keep the streets active and make many routine needs reachable without leaving the immediate area. Housing, work, retail and leisure overlap within short distances, creating convenience and street activity but also a more intensive sound and movement environment. Compact blocks and interior courtyards mediate between active street fronts and quieter private spaces, producing a distinctly walkable inner-city scale.
