Hackenviertel: Asamkirche

A

City part: Altstadt-Lehel | State: 2024

Asamkirche is the defining landmark of this part of the Hackenviertel. The private church of the Asam brothers, built from 1733 to 1746 and officially dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk, is inserted into the continuous row of buildings on Sendlinger Straße behind a façade only about eight metres wide. Its concentrated late-Baroque interior contrasts sharply with the busy pedestrian shopping street outside. The interest lies in the continuity of the built fabric: older façades, courtyards and street proportions remain part of ordinary use rather than functioning as isolated monuments. Ground-floor shops, cafés and everyday services keep the streets active and make many routine needs reachable without leaving the immediate area. Housing, work, retail and leisure overlap within short distances, creating convenience and street activity but also a more intensive sound and movement environment. Compact blocks and interior courtyards mediate between active street fronts and quieter private spaces, producing a distinctly walkable inner-city scale.
