Angerviertel: Rindermarkt
City part: Altstadt-Lehel | State: 2024
Rindermarkt is a sloping old-town square only a short walk from Marienplatz. Its name recalls the cattle market once held here, while the fountain with bronze cattle makes that history visible in the present streetscape. The Ruffinihaus, the medieval Löwenturm, shops and pedestrian routes toward Sendlinger Straße give the square a layered character as both a meeting place and a historic passage through the city centre. The Angerviertel is one of the historic quarters of Munich’s old town, centered on dense lanes, churches and long-established commercial streets. The interest lies in the continuity of the built fabric: older façades, courtyards and street proportions remain part of ordinary use rather than functioning as isolated monuments. Ground-floor shops, cafés and everyday services keep the streets active and make many routine needs reachable without leaving the immediate area. Housing, work, retail and leisure overlap within short distances, creating convenience and street activity but also a more intensive sound and movement environment.
