Reitbrook
City part: Bergedorf | State: 2025
Reitbrook is one of Hamburg’s smallest and most rural districts, spread across the low marshes between the Dove Elbe, drainage canals and cultivated fields. Farmhouses, horticultural businesses and scattered homes follow dikes and narrow country roads rather than forming a compact centre. Vegetable growing, pasture and greenhouse cultivation keep the landscape visibly productive, and wide horizons give the area an openness unusual within the city boundary. The historic Reitbrook windmill is the district’s best-known landmark and recalls the agricultural economy that shaped the settlement. The Dove Elbe supports boating, fishing and waterside recreation, while dike routes are popular with cyclists. Shops, schools and other services are located in neighbouring districts; public transport is limited, so cars remain important. Flood protection and water management are visible in every ditch, pumping structure and raised road. Reitbrook’s special quality is its near-complete rural continuity: despite belonging to a metropolis, it remains a working agricultural landscape with very few residents, a historic mill and an everyday rhythm determined more by seasons and water levels than by urban streets.
