Riedberg

Riedberg is Frankfurt's largest recent planned residential development and a central part of the Science City. Contemporary apartment blocks, townhouses, schools and local shopping centres are arranged around parks and U-Bahn lines. The Goethe University natural-sciences campus and research institutions give the area a strong academic function. Unlike older Frankfurt districts, Riedberg has a deliberately planned street network, consistent modern architecture and broad views over the northern city edge. The immediate contact between urban development and substantial landscape or recreational space is one of the area’s clearest distinguishing qualities. Courtyards, pedestrian links and shared green spaces are therefore important to how the larger housing forms function at neighbourhood level. Green and waterside spaces are not merely decorative: they organise walking routes, views and the transition between built-up sections and the surrounding landscape.
