Kalbach

Kalbach retains a recognizable village centre at the northern edge of Frankfurt while being surrounded by newer housing, sports facilities and open fields. The district is separated from denser urban areas by broad roads and agricultural land, giving it a peripheral structure. The large sports and leisure centre at Am Martinszehnten and the nearby former airfield are major functional landmarks. U-Bahn access connects the settlement with Riedberg and central Frankfurt without removing its village-scale core. What makes the area distinctive is the legible contrast between inherited settlement patterns and later housing, infrastructure or redevelopment. Older plot boundaries, street widths and surviving buildings make the area’s history visible in everyday movement, even where later development has altered the wider setting. Courtyards, pedestrian links and shared green spaces are therefore important to how the larger housing forms function at neighbourhood level.
