Höchst-Süd: Höchster Altstadt
City part: West | State: 2025
Höchster Altstadt is one of Frankfurt’s best-preserved historic ensembles and has been protected as a monument area since 1972. Narrow lanes, timber-framed houses and small squares descend toward the Main, creating a scale very different from the industrial landscape west of the centre. The old and new Höchst castles, the Justinuskirche, the customs tower and the former town hall form a dense group of landmarks, while the baroque Bolongaropalast stands nearby. Schlossplatz, local restaurants and the market hall support everyday activity as well as tourism. Along the river, the redesigned promenade, ferry landing and Brüningpark connect the old town with walking and cycling routes. Höchst station and tram and bus services make the area easy to reach, although the historic core itself is best explored on foot. Its special appeal lies in the unusually complete relationship between architecture, river and public life: the former independent town remains recognisable as a place with its own centre, traditions and strong identity within western Frankfurt.
