Heddernheim-West
City part: Nord-West | State: 2025
Heddernheim-West is dominated by the planned Römerstadt estate and the green edge of the Nidda valley. The late-1920s housing ensemble by Ernst May uses terraced rows, flat roofs and a close relationship between homes, gardens and the landscape. The Ernst May House is the best-known architectural reference point. Niddapark and river paths give the area a more open and recreational character than the older, denser eastern centre of Heddernheim. In Frankfurt’s statistical structure, Heddernheim-West is associated with the broader Heddernheim area. The relief is not a background detail but a defining element that shapes movement, views and the relationship between neighbouring streets. Courtyards, pedestrian links and shared green spaces are therefore important to how the larger housing forms function at neighbourhood level. Green and waterside spaces are not merely decorative: they organise walking routes, views and the transition between built-up sections and the surrounding landscape.
