Universität: Finanzgarten

Finanzgarten is a small historic park hidden between the Residenz, Hofgarten and Odeonsplatz. Mature trees, remnants of old fortifications and a slightly secluded layout create a quiet green refuge in the ceremonial center of Munich. The greenery has a practical everyday role: it shortens the route to recreation, provides shade and play space, and visually separates different groups of buildings. Seasonal change is part of the experience: shade, flowering vegetation, autumn color and winter openness alter both the appearance and the intensity of use. Continuous paths link neighboring streets and districts, allowing the green space to function as both a destination and part of the everyday walking and cycling network. At its edges, the shift from traffic and built frontage to vegetation and open ground is often immediate, which gives the landscape a strong restorative effect. What makes the area especially interesting is the direct contrast between inherited structures and later development; the change can often be read within only a few streets.
