Englischer Garten: Eisbach
City part: Altstadt-Lehel | State: 2024
The Eisbach is the most energetic water feature in the southern English Garden. Its fast current accompanies paths through the park and reaches its best-known point at the Eisbach wave, where river surfing has become part of Munich’s public image. Away from the crowd at the wave, tree-lined banks and smaller bridges create quieter transitions between the park, Lehel and the museum quarter. The English Garden is Munich’s defining urban landscape, stretching from the city center into the northern districts. Meadows, woodland, streams, beer gardens and informal recreation create a unique mix of everyday local life and international landmark. Immediate access to the English Garden makes one of Europe’s largest urban parks part of the daily route rather than a destination reserved for occasional visits. The forest edge changes the area’s daily geography: ordinary residential streets quickly open onto longer walking and cycling routes with a noticeably quieter soundscape.
