Südgiesing: Friedhof am Perlacher Forst
City part: Obergiesing-Fasangarten | State: 2024
The cemetery at Perlacher Forst is a large, wooded memorial landscape with long avenues and a solemn historical atmosphere. The surrounding forest and quiet paths create a strong sense of separation from the city. The forest edge changes the area’s daily geography: ordinary residential streets quickly open onto longer walking and cycling routes with a noticeably quieter soundscape. The gates and perimeter mark a pronounced change in sound, speed and spatial order, separating the memorial landscape from the ordinary traffic of surrounding streets. Seasonal change is part of the experience: shade, flowering vegetation, autumn color and winter openness alter both the appearance and the intensity of use. The greenery has a practical everyday role: it shortens the route to recreation, provides shade and play space, and visually separates different groups of buildings. Graves, monuments and avenues preserve several historical layers, while the mature vegetation also gives the site ecological and recreational value for the surrounding district.
