Südgiesing: Amerikanische Siedlung
City part: Obergiesing-Fasangarten | State: 2024
The Amerikanische Siedlung preserves the spacious planning and detached housing associated with Munich’s post-war US presence. Broad green setbacks, quiet streets and an unusually open layout give it a distinct suburban atmosphere. Built from 1953 for US soldiers and their families, the settlement is distinguished by loose rows of housing, curved streets and park-like green spaces; these features still explain its unusually open character. The separation of traffic, housing and green space reveals the planning ideals of the post-war period, but mature vegetation has made the ensemble feel more settled and less schematic over time. Mature trees and adapted everyday uses now soften the repetition of the original building types, adding variety and a stronger sense of lived-in continuity. Shared open spaces support play, informal encounters and short everyday routes, giving the ensemble a stronger neighborhood function than its architectural repetition might suggest.
