Haidhausen-Süd: Franzosenviertel
City part: Au-Haidhausen | State: 2024
The Franzosenviertel is one of Haidhausen’s most coherent historic quarters, known for its regular street grid and squares named after French cities. Elegant apartment buildings, cafés and strong neighborhood life create a lively but polished urban atmosphere. Haidhausen contributes nineteenth-century streets, neighborhood gastronomy and steep connections toward the Isar, creating a particularly layered urban setting. Development began around 1870, and streets and squares were named after places associated with the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The regular grid and restored Gründerzeit buildings give the Haidhausen quarter an especially coherent historical identity. The interest lies in the continuity of the built fabric: older façades, courtyards and street proportions remain part of ordinary use rather than functioning as isolated monuments. Ground-floor shops, cafés and everyday services keep the streets active and make many routine needs reachable without leaving the immediate area.
