Freiham
City part: Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied | State: 2024
Freiham is Munich’s major new district in the west, planned as a compact but green urban quarter. New housing, schools, local services, broad public spaces and the emerging landscape park give it the atmosphere of a neighborhood still creating its identity. Housing, offices and local services now overlap with traces of the former use, creating a quarter whose new identity still remains connected to earlier layers of the site. Ground-floor shops, cafés and everyday services keep the streets active and make many routine needs reachable without leaving the immediate area. Public spaces, ground-floor uses and the relationship between construction phases are crucial because they determine whether the development becomes a recognizable neighborhood rather than only a collection of new buildings. What makes the area especially interesting is the direct contrast between inherited structures and later development; the change can often be read within only a few streets.
