Alte Heide - Hirschau: Nordfriedhof

The Nordfriedhof is a large historic cemetery with monumental architecture, mature trees and long formal avenues. Despite nearby major roads, its interior has a quiet and dignified park-like atmosphere. The principal landmark provides orientation well beyond the immediate area and gives surrounding streets a shared reference point in the cityscape. The gates and perimeter mark a pronounced change in sound, speed and spatial order, separating the memorial landscape from the ordinary traffic of surrounding streets. Seasonal change is part of the experience: shade, flowering vegetation, autumn color and winter openness alter both the appearance and the intensity of use.
