Altaubing: Aubinger Lohe
City part: Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied | State: 2024
The Aubinger Lohe is a wooded ridge and recreational landscape on Munich’s western edge. Forest paths, clearings and traces of older settlement history make it feel far removed from the dense city. The forest edge changes the area’s daily geography: ordinary residential streets quickly open onto longer walking and cycling routes with a noticeably quieter soundscape. The greenery has a practical everyday role: it shortens the route to recreation, provides shade and play space, and visually separates different groups of buildings. Seasonal change is part of the experience: shade, flowering vegetation, autumn color and winter openness alter both the appearance and the intensity of use. Continuous paths link neighboring streets and districts, allowing the green space to function as both a destination and part of the everyday walking and cycling network. At its edges, the shift from traffic and built frontage to vegetation and open ground is often immediate, which gives the landscape a strong restorative effect.
