Ottensen: Mercado

The subarea known as Mercado gives this part of Ottensen a more precise local identity. It is best understood through the immediate combination of housing, everyday routes, nearby open space and the way local streets connect with the rest of the district. Treating Mercado separately helps expose small-scale differences in urban form and daily life that are easily lost when Ottensen is described only as one large area. The Zeisehallen, Fabrik and numerous theatres, music venues and cinemas give the district a distinctive creative profile. Mercado and the streets around Ottenser Hauptstraße provide extensive shopping, and Altona station offers regional, S-Bahn and bus connections across the city. Ottensen’s special quality is its compact mixture of everyday neighbourhood life and metropolitan culture: historic workers’ housing, industrial conversions, markets, restaurants, transport and the Elbe are all reachable on foot within a small area.
