Kirchwerder: Zollenspieker
City part: Bergedorf | State: 2025
The subarea known as Zollenspieker gives this part of Kirchwerder a more precise local identity. It is best understood through the immediate combination of housing, everyday routes, nearby open space and the way local streets connect with the rest of the district. Treating Zollenspieker separately helps expose small-scale differences in urban form and daily life that are easily lost when Kirchwerder is described only as one large area. St. Severini, with origins reaching back to the medieval village, forms the historic centre, while Zollenspieker at the Elbe is known for its old customs house, ferry connection and wide river views. The extensive Kirchwerder Wiesen nature reserve protects wet meadows and bird habitats and preserves one of Hamburg’s largest open landscapes. Kirchwerder’s special character lies in the continuity of a working river village: dikes, farming, church, ferry and protected meadows still determine the identity more strongly than metropolitan development.
