Curslack
City part: Bergedorf | State: 2025
Curslack is one of the four traditional Vierlande districts and remains strongly shaped by market gardening, water management and the long ribbon settlement along its dikes. Historic farmhouses, many with richly decorated façades and tiled interior walls, recall both the prosperity of vegetable and flower production and the former risk of regular flooding. Parts of the old village are protected as a heritage ensemble. The Rieck Haus open-air museum preserves a complete historic farmstead and explains the distinctive building culture and agricultural life of the Vierlande, while St. Johannis church forms another important landmark. Greenhouses, nurseries and narrow fields continue to make the district a productive landscape rather than a purely residential suburb. The major Curslack waterworks also gives the area an important role in Hamburg’s drinking-water supply. Buses and the nearby A25 connect it with Bergedorf, but canals, quiet dike roads and wide marsh views dominate the experience. Curslack is special because living heritage is not staged separately from everyday work: historic houses, modern horticulture and water infrastructure remain closely interwoven.
