Jenfeld: Berliner Platz
City part: Wandsbek | State: 2025
Berliner Platz functions as a recognizable local focal point within Jenfeld. Shops, services, public space and everyday pedestrian movement are more concentrated here than in quieter residential parts of the district, so the micro-area has a more active and outward-facing character. Describing Berliner Platz separately makes the local centre, rather than the whole parent district, the starting point for understanding daily life. Small houses and established residential streets survive around the historic centre, while larger apartment complexes and housing from the 1960s and 1970s shape other parts. On the former Lettow-Vorbeck barracks, the Jenfelder Au has become a green mixed neighbourhood with apartments, townhouses, workplaces and a network of ponds and paths; its innovative water-cycle concept makes infrastructure part of the development idea. Jenfeld has no rapid-transit station, so buses and nearby motorway access are central to mobility, and through traffic remains noticeable.
