Altengamme
City part: Bergedorf | State: 2025
Altengamme is Hamburg’s easternmost district and one of the clearest examples of the rural Vierlande landscape. Historic farmhouses stand in a long ribbon behind the Elbe dike, with cultivated fields, orchards and drainage channels extending far into the marsh. Agriculture remains visible in everyday life, and the scale of the landscape is defined more by farm plots, greenhouses and flood protection than by urban blocks. The old village centre and St. Nicolai church provide historical anchors, while traditional house forms and decorative façades recall the prosperity once created by supplying Hamburg with produce. Along the Elbe, the Borghorster Elblandschaft nature reserve protects meadows, dunes and a large brack formed by a former dike breach, adding valuable habitats to the working countryside. Bus links connect the settlement with Bergedorf, but distances are long and the atmosphere remains quiet, spacious and unmistakably that of a river village at the edge of the metropolis.
